Super League review (1st and 2nd November) - Knights women secure first top-flight success

A double header in West Yorkshire saw both teams in the women’s and men’s categories seeking first wins of the season after losing their Opening Weekend fixtures.
And it was the North Easterners who journeyed back up the A1 happy after both broke their respective ducks to get their seasons up and running.
The women’s match was contested first at the Ruth Gorse Academy and saw Sam Shenton’s side strike the first blow as they edged the first set 25-21.

It proved to be crucial as the Knights cruised to the second set by a 25-15 margin and then closed things out 25-21 in the third against a youthful Gorse side.
American Renee Killough was named MVP for the visitors, while setter Lauren Thorn was nominated for Leeds.
The men’s match was fiercely fought and even in the opening stages of the first two sets before the Knights gradually pulled away to take them 25-18, 25-21.
But Leeds hit back in the third, winning 25-19 to give themselves hope of registering a reverse sweep.

That possibility was quickly shut down by Newcastle, however, as they regained their composure to take an early lead in the fourth set which they never relinquished en route to a 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17 victory.
England’s James Ledbury served impressively as he was MVP for the Knights, while Nelson Murangwa took the honours for Gorse.
